Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada connects caring adult mentors with young people to help them build meaningful relationships and reach their full potential. Every child can use another caring adult in their corner.
What is a Big? What is a Little?
+
A "Big" is the adult mentor. A "Little" is the child mentee.
What do I have to do to become a volunteer mentor aka "Big"?
+
Click on "Become A Mentor" on the homepage of bbbsn.org and submit your application. You will need to watch a short video and answer a few questions. The next step, we will contact you to schedule a time for you to come to our office for orientation. You will schedule a second trip to our office to conduct an in depth interview with one of our Match Support Specialists. The next time you show up at our office, you will be meeting your Little! Bigs and Littles are matched based on similar interests.
Is there a minimum time commitment required to become a Big?
+
Community based matches require 4 to 6 hours a month. Site based matches require 1 to 2 hours a week depending on site location.
Do I have to take any classes to become a Big?
+
You will have to do an orientation class at our office. You are also required to have a 15-20 minute phone call once a month with your Match Support Specialist discussing your outings with your Little. We can help guide you through any issues that develop in the relationship.
My life is not perfect, why would I become a mentor?
+
The Littles in our program do not need an adult to be perfect. They just need you to be present.
What do I do with my Little?
+
If you are in a community based match, you can take your Little to the park, the library, or out to eat. Our office also provides random tickets to events such as sporting events, concerts and shows. It does not have to cost you anything outside of gas money and your time. Kids want to spend time with you. It is not about how much you can spend on them.
Do I need a background check or fingerprinting?
+
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada does require background checks for all Bigs. If you are doing a site based match at a CCSD school site, then CCSD does require fingerprinting as well.
What do I do if I find out something is happening at home or at school with my Little Brother or Little Sister?
+
You would contact your Match Support Specialist immediately and discuss the issue with them. We will help guide you through anything that comes up.
